7 socio-cultural obstacles in Cambodia, which stop a progress

“I profoundly thank the government of People's Republic of China and those who are architects and engineers that provided funds and helped to build a very good Friendship Building for the Council of Ministers.”
King Norodom Sihamoni inaugurated a new building for the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, thanking China for a reported $50 million contribution.

The “Friendship Building” will house the Council of Ministers, which administers executive work as the prime minister's cabinet, although the prime minister and his advisers will work in a separate building.

“I profoundly thank the government of People's Republic of China and those who are architects and engineers that provided funds and helped to build a very good Friendship Building for the Council of Ministers,” Norodom Sihamoni said.

The king recently returned from China on Oct. 10, following a two-week visit, where he took part in the Shanghai World Expo. His father, former king Norodom Sihanouk, remains in Beijing for health reasons.

“China has constantly provided Cambodia in all domains,” Norodom Sihamoni said Tuesday.

Chinese Ambassador Pang Guang Xue said China would “continue its assistance” to “a good friend, a good neighbor, good brothers and sisters, and good partners.”

Cambodia has maintained a close relationship with China for decades, including military and political support. China recently provided several rounds of military equipment shipments, including one of military trucks after the US suspended a similar package for human rights concerns.

Far from a Western conceit, talk of freedom surfaces at every opportunity

One of the worst conceits of modern Sinologists is that China is not like the West, that its people harbor different goals in life, and that freedom isn't one of them. According to that mindset, the Nobel Prize awarded last week to dissident Liu Xiaobo is a meaningless gesture made by foreigners and unreflective of the Chinese people's wishes. Yet when China's leadership signals a tolerance, however slight, for openness, debate about freedom blooms.

As Cambodia's economy booms after years of war and instability, its residents are struggling to cope with a new problem: Land grabs and forced evictions that have affected more than 250,000 Cambodians over the past five years, according to Cambodia-based rights group Licadho, which began recording data on land disputes in 2005.

Couldn't the CPP see that this a national disgrace for Cambodia?

An estimated 250,000 Cambodians have been affected by land grabbing and forced evictions since 2005. Few Cambodians possess official land titles, making it easier for private businesses to force people off their land to make way for urban development projects and large-scale agro-business plantations.
In central Phnom Penh, more than 4,000 families living near Boeung Kak Lake will be evicted from their homes to make way for a 329-acre housing and commercial development project. At left, residents harvested morning glory, a local vegetable, which grows in the shallows at the edges of the lake. Many families have lived there for 10 to 25 years, but few possess land titles. Letter to The Phom Penh Post

Dear Editor,
On a recent return trip to the Kingdom, former United States Ambassador to Cambodia Joseph Mussomeli stated that “every nation has interests it wants to advance and protect” in its foreign relations with other states. According to Mussomeli, while the interests of China in Cambodia are access to natural resources, those of the US and some European governments relate to democracy and justice and, in the case of the US, are “inextricably linked to the Cambodian government’s commitment and attitude to its own people”.

Opinion by Theary C. Seng

I have been a reader of KI Media from the very beginning but only religiously within the last couple of years and would like to send a belated public congratulations on its 5th anniversary and its 10 Million visitor milestone. I am pleased to be mentioned as an “inspiration” for its inception, especially when I have such a high regard for KI Media for its value and contribution to democracy in Cambodia.

Recently, I have been delighted with the postings of Khmer Democrat. Where have you been the last 5 years?! Personally, I may not adopt some of the manner of speech but my appreciation extends beyond my own sensibility to the values these postings have for democracy and freedom of expression in Cambodia.

First, I like the edgy, irreverent, sly subversive, intelligent tone. KI Media commentaries, specifically those of Khmer Democrat and Sacrava, are different from the often vulgar comments in the free for all section where, due to a lack of imaginative shaping, these personal, racial, sexist attacks usually remained at the level of invective.

Election in the Philippines is now automated, unlike what was reported by VOA

Dear KI Media Editors,

I'm a Filipino that has been working in the development sector here in Cambodia for almost 2 years now. I follow and appreciate your news service and would just like to comment on the article below on " Chaotic But Widespread Voting in the Philippines" which has reported several inaccuracies.

Let shoulder together to successfully join this very important Rally

Dear Khmer Compatriots;
So, have you asked yourself what have you done for your country up to now? Have you voiced your concern about your country? Have you ever written letters of protest to those misbehavior leaders? Have you participated any rally or protest to show your solidarity to the world?
